MDG3 Champion Torch: “To Do Something Extra”

On 7th March 2008 the Global MDG3 Champion Torch was launched in Copenhagen, Denmark. In the run-up to a planned UN High Level MDG meeting on 25 September 2008, more than 100 MDG3 Torches will travel around the world.

Recipients of the MDG3 Torch will be representatives of governments, the private sector, civil society, the media, individuals from North and South, and international organisations.

Each MDG3 Torch Bearer will commit to “Doing Something Extra” in support of gender equality and women’s economic empowerment.

The MDG3 Torch may be passed to others that make additional commitments – thereby igniting a wave of global resolve in support of MDG3, which, of course, underpins all of the Millennium Development Goals.

At the planned UN High Level MDG meeting on 25th September 2008, all commitments will be presented to Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, who will be invited to light the last MDG3 Torch.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Denmark has launched a website that provides information on what is being done in that country to support the Torch campaign. The website may be found at http://www.mdg3action.um.dk/en/menu/MDG+3+Torch/Torch+Campaign/
