FIGO Committee on Gynecologic Oncology
The FIGO Committee on Gynecologic Oncology is one of a number of dedicated Committees established to implement the priorities of FIGO.
Aims & Ambitions of The FIGO Committee on Gynecologic Oncology
The aims of the Committee are:
· To make recommendations on the classification and staging of gynaecologic cancer
· To make recommendations relating to research, screening, prevention, and management of gynaecologic cancer, particularly in developing countries
· To liaise with other cancer societies
· To draft and supervise the publication of the FIGO Oncology Annual Reports
These tasks were amplified and expanded as follows:
- Staging
· Continue to review existing gynaecologic staging systems and reports of treatment outcomes in relation to staging and revise staging.
· Particular attention should be given to the possibility of undertaking a review of the staging of cervical cancer
· Collaboration with other organisations – UICC, AJCC and IGCC – should continue to encourage their acceptance of FIGO staging or to issue joint staging recommendations.
- Clinical Practice Guidelines
· Revise current practice guidelines in accordance with new research, therapy available and the findings of the “Annual Report of the Results of Treatment of Gynecologic Cancer”
· Consider ways of delivering care in developed and developing countries.
- Annual Report on The Results of Treatment in Gynecologic Cancer (“Annual Report”)
· Produce the Annual Report.
· Evaluate the Annual Report based on FIGO clinical practice guidelines vs. other forms of treatment.
· Develop a budget regarding the production of the report.
- Training programmes
· Requests should be made to national societies to establish their willingness to send experts on a voluntary basis to train physicians in needy developing countries. Arrangements should be made to ensure that the activity is sustainable. Physicians wishing to become involved must ensure that they have sufficient time available to train many physicians, conduct courses, advise on improvements to services, plan research and visit undergraduate teaching units to give valuable advice. It is envisaged that periods of 3 to 6 months will be required. Funding should be sought from FIGO national societies, pharmaceutical companies and charitable organisations.
- Breast Cancer
· The Committee should explore further the feasibility of working with other groups who are already involved in breast cancer; jointly they should prepare revised staging and clinical practice guidelines.
In addition to the specific aims and objectives outlined, the Committee is encouraged to formulate additional proposals for the Officers and Executive Board to consider.
