FIGO/BSP FELLOWSHIP FOR POST- DOCTORAL RESEARCH
OBJECTIVE
The International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) and Bayer Schering Pharma AG (BSP) have established an annual post-doctorate Fellowship to allow junior obstetricians and gynecologists from developing countries to study for a maximum of one year in a centre of excellence at home and abroad. The next Fellowship will start in late 2008.
The Fellowship is aimed at providing research opportunities and academic training with a clinical emphasis and is primarily aimed at assisting practitioners from low- or middle-income countries.
A further aim of the Fellowship is to ensure that the successful candidate obtains well focused and research-based training in a recognised tertiary institution that includes some additional academic training beyond research. This should include exposure to modern ethics committees and other research governance.
RESEARCH TOPIC
The chosen research topic should be in the area of reproductive health, obstetrics or gynaecology and/or women’s sexual and reproductive health and should, in any case, include those aspects of sexual and reproductive health relevant to the research being undertaken
ELIGIBILITY
The applicants must be:
· 40 years old or younger
· resident of a low- or middle-income country
· able to communicate fluently in English and/or the language of the host institution
· holder of a postgraduate degree in obstetrics and/or gynecology
· holder of an academic post in a teaching institution
APPLICATION
Candidates must submit their applications through and with the endorsement of their national society of obstetrics and gynecology.
The application must include:
· a letter from an authorised representative of the applicant’s national society of obstetrics and gynecology confirming its support and endorsement
· a letter of endorsement from the applicant’s home institution
· a letter of acceptance from the application’s host institution – which must be a recognised tertiary institution - confirming that the applicant will receive focused and research-based training that will include additional academic training beyond research, including exposure to modern ethics committees and other research governance
· A completed application form and supporting documentation including copies of certificates showing qualifications translated into English where required.
THE FELLOWSHIP
The Fellowship will cover:
· return airfare to the centre of excellence abroad
· living expenses up to a maximum of US$3,000 per month for six months abroad and US$1,000 per month at the home laboratory. This stipend will be calculated on the basis of prevailing scholarships granted in the host institution’s country
REPORTS AND PUBLICATIONS
· An interim progress report at the end of the first six months and a final report within two months of completion of the study should be submitted by the Fellow and each of his/her Supervisors.
· Any publication must contain an acknowledgement of support from FIGO/Science Office/Bayer Schering Pharma AG and a copy must be sent to the FIGO Secretariat.
SELECTION OF CANDIDATES
· A Selection Committee composed of representatives of FIGO and Science Office/Bayer Schering Pharma AG will notify the successful applicant by the end of September 2008
