ABOUT FIGO

The International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) is the only global organisation representing national associations of obstetricians and gynecologists from over 113 countries.  FIGO promotes educational activities to improve standards of professional care within obstetrics and gynecology.

ABOUT PROFESSOR CHIEN-TIEN HSU

Chien-Tien Hsu was professor of obstetrics and gynecology and biochemistry at the Taipei Medical College and, subsequently, professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the National Yang-Ming Medical College, both in Taipei, Taiwan.  Professor Hsu became internationally renowned for his work in radical surgery for cervical cancer.  He served on many FIGO committees but most notably on its Oncology Committee. Following his death in 1992, the FIGO/Chien-Tien Hsu Fellowship for young physicians beginning a career in gynecologic oncology was established in his honour and memory.

OBJECTIVE   

The Chien-Tien Hsu Research Foundation and FIGO have established a fellowship to enable young obstetricians and gynecologists who are beginning a career in gynecologic oncology to attend the FIGO world congress and to visit a gynecologic oncology centre in the country where a FIGO congress is being held.

THE FELLOWSHIP

A grant of US$ 5,000 will be awarded to each successful applicant to defray the expenses incurred in attending the FIGO World Congress of Gynecology and Obstetrics.

ELIGIBILITY

Applicants must:

Be 40 years old or younger

Be able to communicate fluently in English

Hold a postgraduate degree in obstetrics and gynaecology

Engaged in a research project in oncology

Able to present an oral communication or poster at the XIX FIGO World Congress on Gynecology Obstetrics to be held on 4th –9th October 2009 in Cape Town, South Africa.

APPLICATION

Candidates must complete an application form and support it with the following documents:

Photocopies of (a) a valid passport, (b) a medical degree, (c) a postgraduate degree (d)

translation into English of all degrees

A letter of recommendation from head of department

A summary of a free communication to be presented at the FIGO World Congress on a subject

related to gynecologic oncology

Seven (7) copies of the completed application form and supporting documents

REPORTS

A report will need to be submitted to FIGO by the end of December 2009.  This report will be

considered for publication in the Federation’s Newsletter. 

SELECTION OF CANDIDATES FIGO and the Chien-Tien Hsu Foundation will appoint a

Selection Committee to review the applications.  Successful candidates will be notified by the

end of June 2009.
