Essential Interventions Project

FIGO Project for ‘Improving the Quality of Maternal and Newborn Healthcare Services through Accelerated Implementation of the “Essential Interventions” by the Healthcare Professionals’ Associations’   (in collaboration with the International Confederation of Midwives and the International Pediatric Association)

Duration: 2014-2015

Donor: The Partnership for Maternal, Newborn and Child Health (PMNCH)

Background: Strategically focusing on the birth and postnatal period  - covering a critical period for mothers and newborns  - brings a valuable opportunity for obstetricians, midwives and paediatricians to work collaboratively, culminating in a change in practice in relation to the selected ‘Essential Interventions’.  ‘Essential Interventions’ are those healthcare interventions that have been defined by the World Health Organization (WHO) as having the biggest potential to reduce maternal and newborn deaths.

Project aims:

To accelerate dissemination mechanisms for 17 ‘Essential Interventions’; to institutionalise quality implementation of the ‘Essential Interventions’; and to establish strong collaborative work between the three HCPAs, Ministries of Health, WHO, civil society, academia and the private sector, for accelerating the implementation of the ‘Essential Interventions’.
