The letter urges G8 leaders to double official development assistance (ODA) for maternal, newborn and child health to fill the 3.5 million gap of health workers in countries where women often give birth alone or without professional help. 

Nick Clegg receives the letter signed by FIGOFashion icon and maternal health advocate Christy Turlington Burns met Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg to personally deliver an appeal on behalf of women and newborn babies of the world whose lives are endangered from lack of basic health care.   

Mr Clegg was handed over an important pack which included the Atlas of Birth ‐ a compendium of the latest data on maternal mortality in developing countries ‐ along with two open letters urging G8 leaders to accelerate actions to achieve Millennium Development Goals 4 and 5.
