Workshop on safe motherhood launched in Sana'a

A workshop on safe motherhood was launched in Sana'a, Yemen, by the Women National Committee (WNC) and National Safe Motherhood Alliance (NSMA).

Lasting two days, the workshop involved 20 women leaders from civil society organisations, SabaNews.net reported.

It aimed to introduce the concept of safe motherhood, customs and traditions, misconceptions about maternal and child healthcare and danger signs in childbirth and pregnancy.

WNC chairwoman Rashidha al-Hamdani highlighted the importance of the session to familiarize the participants with knowledge on safe motherhood and health issues.

She also pointed out the importance of promoting health education and behaviour change of misconceptions among some Yemeni communities
At the workshop the NSMA also reviewed what the organisation has done to define community issues of safe motherhood and to reduce the mortality of mothers and newborns.

The WNC is the technical committee of the Supreme Council for Women Affairs. It was created by an act from the prime minister in August 1996.
