Society of Gynaecology and Obstetrics of Nigeria
SOGON is the organisation that coordinates the activities of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists in Nigeria. It was established in 1965 with an initial membership of 50 and now has over 1000 members throughout the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
The vision of SOGON is an organization where all members are professionally empowered and committed to the pursuit of the rights of women to achieve the highest possible standards of physical, mental, reproductive and sexual health and wellbeing throughout their lives.
The Mission of SOGON is to be dedicated to the improvement of women’s health and rights and the reduction of maternal and newborn mortality, as well as advancing the science and practice of gynaecology and obstetrics in Nigeria.
SOGON has developed guidelines on the use of misoprostol in PPH and MgSO4 and facilitated the introduction of their use in some facilities of Gombe state.
The association received the mandate from the Federal Ministry of Health to develop a set of forms, tools and guidelines for MDRs. Through wide stakeholder consultation, review of other country’s experiences and expert input from FIGO-LOGIC, a set of documents have been prepared and submitted to the Federal Ministry of Health. Piloting at district, state and federal level is planned for this year.
SOGON has renewed their strategic plan for the 2013-2017 period with support from FIGO-LOGIC.
SOGON has instituted a Business Development committee that will focus on the financial strategy of the association. FIGO-LOGIC will support the initial capacity building of this committee.
