Haiti
A project for strengthening the Health Centre of Croix Des Bouquets
La Société haïtienne d’obstétrique et de gynécologie (SHOG) in Haiti is providing quality basic and comprehensive emergency obstetric care within a public health center located in Croix-des-Bouquets. Before the project, the center offered only antenatal and postnatal care: now 24-hour maternity care is being provided. Key interventions have included provision of drugs, equipment, supplies and midwifery staff. In order to increase demand, the Project has decided to work with community groups and traditional birth attendants. It is expected that SHOG’s work will increase the collaboration between itself, the midwifery association and the Ministry of Health.
Key successes:
- The number of deliveries has increased to 150 deliveries per month compared to 30 per month in 2009.
- 24-hour comprehensive emergency obstetric care is available. Caesareans are now being performed.
- The number of beds in the maternity ward is increasing from eight to 20.
- UNFPA has committed to supporting staff.
