Comprehensive action to save mothers and newborns in Peru
The Peruvian Society for Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (SPOG) is working to decrease maternal and newborn mortality and morbidity by improving healthcare services, as well as increasing the demand for these services in nine health facilities. Their focus is to provide technical support in the implementation of the Ministry of Health’s (MINSA) strategy through activities such as training, supervision, maternal death audits, implementation of protocols and guidelines and community sensitisation. The project entails a high level of co-ordination between the political, health and university authorities' Health Professional Regional Association of Physicians, Midwives and Nurses and Regional Direction of MOH and Morropón-Chulucanas Network Health. Many alliances have also been created between local and international organisations such as UNFPA, Pathfinder International, the International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF) and Fundación Educación para la Salud Reproductiva (ESAR).
Key successes:
- A complex and high level of collaboration between the obstetrical association and other organisations, including government.
- The project team has been able to identify problems in the delivery of reproductive health care and work very closely with the network to improve its management.
- Improved obstetric care through the implementation of standards, training in emergency obstetric care, provision of equipment and better referrals.
- Schools in the area have started to request sexual and reproductive health information and education in their schools.
- The Morropón-Chulucanas Network Health Network is highly supportive of the project.
