Uganda
Building capacity for the reduction of maternal and newborn mortality and morbidity in two poor Ugandan districts through the provision of emergency obstetric and essential newborn care
The Association of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Uganda has been working to improve the quality of maternal and neonatal healthcare at six health facilities in the Kiboga and Kibaale districts by ensuring an enabling environment and training of staff. Four of the facilities provide basic emergency obstetric care, while two provide comprehensive emergency obstetric care. More recently, as part of the next phase of the project, focus has turned towards increasing the demand side of health services through community mobilisation and sensitisation activities.
Key successes:
-
Provided an AIP course for administrators to learn of health workers’ challenges when managing maternal cases and what they can do to support this. The administrators from each district had the opportunity to develop action plans to improve the working conditions and quality of maternal care.
-
Leveraged funds to support community mobilisation for maternal healthcare.
-
32 communities were mobilised to save funds for health emergencies.
-
Over 530 individuals have been supported through this fund.
