Improving emergency obstetric care in Ukraine: applying the ALARM international program

The Ukrainian Association of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (UAOG) has been using the ALARM International Program to strengthen its capacity to improve the quality of emergency obstetric care and family planning services in Ukraine. The objectives of the program were to: strengthen UAOG’s organisational structural capacity to promote and conduct Continuing Medical Education (CME) activities related to emergency obstetric care and family planning in the Ukraine; build UAOG’s capacity to promote and implement the ALARM International Program as one of its major CME programs; and strengthen the capacity of UAOG to integrate a rights-based approach within the ALARM International Program.

Key successes:

  • Increased knowledge in the active management of the third stage of labour.
  • Decreased number of hysterectomies to treat post-partum hemorrhage.
  • Evaluation of the instructors demonstrated a group of individuals highly capable of delivering the AIP.
  • Increased use of evidence-based practice in participating hospitals.
  • Inclusion of midwives in the training and instruction of the course.
