Objective: To determine the proportion of adolescent births in Van, Turkey, and to identify characteristics and related outcomes. Methods: Mothers who gave birth at three maternity centers in Van, Turkey, were chosen randomly and were invited to complete a face-to-face questionnaire. Participants were asked for demographic information and pregnancy history. Pregnancy outcomes were obtained from the birth records. Results: Of 1872 mothers who completed the questionnaires, 211 (11.3%) were younger than 19years. Adolescent mothers showed significantly more inappropriate education for age (82.5% vs 70.1; P<0.001) and were married to less educated partners (76.3% vs 59.4%; P<0.001) following unofficial matrimonies (25.6% vs 10.7%; P<0.001) than older...

Twenty-five years after the FIGO guidelines for the use of fetal monitoring: Time for a simplified approach?

Publication year: 2010
Source: International Journal of Gynecology & Obstetrics, In Press, Corrected Proof, Available online 30 April 2010

Diogo, Ayres-de-Campos , João, Bernardes

Twenty-five years after the FIGO Workshop that produced the “Guidelines for the use of fetal monitoring,” these remain the only broad international consensus effort in this field. Documents of a similar nature have been produced by national institutions, with subsequent updates of the initial concepts. The 3-class classification system has now been adopted by all the major guidelines, and while there are numerous similar features, and indeed many ideas were inspired by the FIGO guidelines, many key aspects still lack consensus. Making guidelines simpler and more objective may be an important step to guarantee a wide application and assimilation of...

Addressing diversity in adolescent sexual and reproductive health services

Publication year: 2010
Source: International Journal of Gynecology & Obstetrics, In Press, Corrected Proof, Available online 27 April 2010

Laura, Laski , Sylvia, Wong

The social, economic, and biological events that mark adolescence profoundly influence and shape future adult lives. Sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services, education, and other social programs are needed to support young people for a healthy start. As adolescents transition into adulthood, SRH programs and services that have skilled health providers, in combination with other social services including comprehensive sexuality education, can help prevent unwanted pregnancies, maternal mortality and morbidity, as well as sexually transmitted infections including HIV/AIDS. Programs and services can also provide counseling to prevent sexual violence and abuse and deal with its consequences. Adolescent SRH programs can...

A noninvasive evaluation of autonomic nervous system dysfunction in women with an overactive bladder

Publication year: 2010
Source: International Journal of Gynecology & Obstetrics, In Press, Corrected Proof, Available online 25 April 2010

Wen-Chien, Liao , Fu-Shan, Jaw

Objective: To verify the hypothesis that a connection exists between overactive bladder (OAB) syndrome and a bladder-specific dysfunction of the autonomic nervous system (ANS). Method: An electrocardiogram recorded heartbeat cycles from the onset of urinary urgency to 5minutes after voiding in 33 women with an overactive bladder and 176 controls. Power spectral density (PSD) analysis allowed to quantify heart rate variability (HRV), which is in relation to ANS function. Three-dimensional spectrograms and multiscale entropy graphs were used to display HRV values. Results: The differences between patients and controls were all significant in the time and frequency domains of HRV (P<0.05), which suggests disturbances in bladder-specific...
