India launches country's first female condom

The first female condom produced in India has been officially launched in the country.

Female condoms have been available in other locations for several years, but this is the first time that such a product has been both manufactured and sold in India.

The Times of India reports that the condom - to be known under the brand name Velvet - was launched by the country's union minister for health and family welfare Jagat Prakash Nadda, who stated: "The female condom provides complete protection and gives women more control over safe sex. It is all about empowering women."

He added that Velvet is currently the only method of contraception that a female can be in control of that provides protection against pregnancy, as well as sexually-transmitted infections, including HIV and AIDS.

Velvet has been manufactured by HLL Lifecare Ltd, an Indian government-approved enterprise contracted by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.ADNFCR-2094-ID-801816354-ADNFCR
