UK women seeking smear tests

More women in the UK are seeking advice on their gynaecological health than ever before, it has been claimed.

Spire Healthcare, a major private hospital provider, says it has seen a significant increase in the number of enquiries from women desiring smear tests.

It offers test results within five days, something the firm says can help reduce anxiety among patients.

Dr Tim Broadhead, a consultant gynaecologist at Spire Leeds Hospital and Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust, says screening is "extremely important".

He adds: "Though abnormalities are rare, treatment outcomes are better the earlier they are detected, and regular and consistent screening plays an important part in this.

"The recent increase in enquiries and appointments demonstrates just how women are taking cervical screening more seriously than ever before and the message about the importance being screened is getting heard."

Earlier this month, it was revealed that the age women are permitted National Health Service smear tests – currently 25 – is being reviewed.ADNFCR-2094-ID-19098577-ADNFCR
