Young people 'need better sex and relationships advice'

Many young people are provided with inadequate education on sex and relationships, it has been claimed.

According to Anna Martinez, co-ordinator of the UK Sex Education Forum, based at the National Children's Bureau, there is "a big gap" between the education young people need, and what they are receiving.

She claimed that good quality sex and relationship advice is vital if young people are to learn the skills and knowledge they need to stay safe and healthy.

This support must extend beyond an introduction to basic biology, Ms Martinez added.

"Many young people still don't know how their body works, how to protect themselves from pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections, and where to get help when they need it," she said.

The UK Department of Health recently launched a new campaign to help young people make more informed choices about contraception, look after their sexual health and avoid unwanted pregnancies.
