After Argentina: Latin America responds.
How health workers and advocates can leverage the Argentinean experience to legalise access to safe abortion.
Time: 8pm UK (UTC+1) / 2pm (CDT)
Description: Half a million women and girls undergo unsafe abortions every year in Argentina. Unsafe abortions have been a major contributor to preventable maternal mortality and morbidity in the country, with 14% of maternal deaths accounted for by unsafe abortion. On 30 December 2020, Argentina legalised abortion up to 14 weeks of pregnancy. Argentina has joined Guyana and Uruguay as one of just a few South American countries that have legalised access to safe abortion, an important element of universal health care and reproductive health for women around the world.
This webinar, organised by the FIGO Advocating for Safe Abortion Project, aims to share critical insights and lessons from crosscutting strategies on how Ob-Gyns and health-workers mobilised within Argentina, and will explore next steps. Critically, it will ask what health-workers and advocates must prioritise to ensure safe abortion services are accessible by women/girls in Argentina, Latin America and beyond. The webinar will begin with two short presentations followed by a roundtable discussion and Q&A.
