FIGO Response to the Nairobi Statement
FIGO welcomes the Nairobi Statement on ICPD25: Accelerating the Promise, and looks forward to working with partners and fellow women’s health champions to turn these commitments into concrete progress and ensure rights and choices for all.
The hopes, dreams and expectations of the 1994 ICPD in Cairo have not yet been fully achieved. As the Nairobi statement acknowledges, new threats to progress have also emerged, including growing inequalities, humanitarian crisis and climate change. On the other hand, youth populations across the world are mobilising for their rights, but are still unfairly missing out on sexual and reproductive health and rights. For these reasons FIGO believes it is essential our efforts are redoubled to finish the uncompleted business of the ICPD Programme of Action.
FIGO has worked tirelessly for 65 years to mobilise health professionals to deal effectively with the current and future challenges to health and to take joint actions to build stronger and sustainable quality health care towards achieving universal health coverage.
FIGO welcomes the 12 commitments in the Statement and has committed to work with our National Member Societies and partners to continue to strengthen, improve, monitor and audit global efforts to ensure that no-one is left behind.
FIGO’s own commitments for the Summit particularly support the goals of;

Reaching zero unmet need for family planning, and universal, availability of quality, accessible and safe, modern contraceptives

Zero preventable maternal deaths including from obstetric fistula and unsafe abortion, and access to safe abortion to the full extent of the law

Zero sexual and gender-based violence and harmful practices, including zero child, early and forced marriage, as well as zero female genital mutilation

Ensuring the full range of sexual and reproductive health and rights are included in humanitarian response.
