The British government has spoken out against the practice of female genital mutilation.

According to equalities minister Lynne Featherstone, this is an "abhorrent crime" and those who subject women to the procedure must be punished.

Indeed, she stressed that practitioners must "feel the full force of the law" in order to stop them mutilating females.

"We are working with UK and international agencies to help prevent women and girls being subjected to this horrific practice," Ms Featherstone commented.

A leaflet on the subject of female genital mutilation is to be published by the British government in the near future.

This will be a pocket-sized document that outlines information on what help and support channels are available to those affected, as well as details on what penalties offenders can expect to receive.

The World Health Organization believes the procedure can lead to many future health problems, such as complications when giving birth, infections, cysts and urinary issues.
