FIGO is pleased to announce the launch of its masterclass series on developing a better understanding of polycystic ovary syndrome PCOS. The series is coordinated by Dr Jaideep Malhotra, Chair of FIGO's Committee on Reproductive Medicine, Endocrinology and Infertility and Dr Ivonne Diaz, Director of FIGO's Division of Sexual and Reproductive Health and Wellbeing.

Summary and aim of the masterclass series

Episodes will cover a variety of topics that together highlight the long-term implications of PCOS on women’s health, from adolescence to menopause. The key aim of the series is to educate health care workers on the diagnosis and management of PCOS for the prevention of long-term issues for women.

5 to 10 % of girls and women globally have PCOS, which can have many short and long-term implications for their physical, mental and emotional health, affecting their quality of life. This masterclass is focused on educating the members of our community about not only the latest research and evidence in the diagnosis and management of all the related problems – irregular periods, infertility, pregnancy-related complications, cosmetic problems – but also on the prevention of long-term consequences, such as metabolic syndrome. Understanding these will enhance the capacity of health care providers to manage PCOS, help to spread awareness of the condition and to control epigenetic changes in reducing the disease’s burden in the future.

Masterclass schedule and registration

Masterclasses will take place on the third Friday of every month, running from May to October 2022. Installments will cover a variety of topics that together highlight the long-term implications of PCOS on women’s health, from adolescence to menopause.

As highlighted by Dr Diaz, “the masterclass will deepen the audience’s knowledge of PCOS, a condition that prevails during the reproductive years, producing not only infertility but also alterations that involve other medical specialties (outside of OBGYN), which will be highlighted by our excellent speakers”.

The first episode of the series will be a masterclass by Professor Alexia Peña from the University of Adelaide, who will provide an update on the diagnosis and management of adolescent PCOS. This session will take place on Friday 20 May 2022 at 14:00 UTC+1, and registration is now open
