FIGO and Chien-Tien Hsu Fellowship in Gynaecologic Oncology
FIGO and the Chien-Tien Hsu Research Foundation are partnering once again to offer a travel Fellowship to enable two young obstetricians and gynaecologists to attend the FIGO World Congress, which will next be held in Paris, France on 9–12 October 2023. In addition to attending the FIGO 2023 World Congress, the Fellowship will provide an opportunity to attend a centre of excellence in gynaecologic oncology in Paris on 2–6 October 2023, to gain clinical and research experience.
About FIGO
The International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) is the only global organisation representing national member societies of obstetricians and gynaecologists from more than 130 countries. FIGO promotes educational activities to improve standards of professional care within obstetrics and gynaecology.
About Professor Chien-Tien Hsu
Chien-Tien Hsu was Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology and Biochemistry at the Taipei Medical College and, subsequently, Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the National Yang-Ming Medical College, both in Taipei, Taiwan. Professor Hsu became internationally renowned for his work in radical surgery for cervical cancer. He served on many FIGO committees – most notably on its Oncology Committee. Following his death in 1992, the FIGO/Chien-Tien Hsu Fellowship for young physicians beginning a career in gynaecologic oncology was established in his honour and memory.
Objective
The Chien-Tien Hsu Research Foundation and FIGO have established a fellowship to enable young obstetricians and gynaecologists who are beginning a career in gynaecologic oncology to attend the FIGO World Congress and to visit a gynaecologic oncology centre in the country where a FIGO Congress is being held.
The Fellowship
A grant of US$5,000 will be awarded to each successful applicant to defray the expenses incurred in attending the XXIV FIGO World Congress of Gynecology and Obstetrics (9–12 October 2023) and to attend a centre of excellence in gynaecologic oncology in Paris (2–6 October 2023), to gain clinical and research experience. It is important to note that successful applicants must be available to attend both the centre placement and the Congress event.
Eligibility
Applicants must:
- be 40 years old or younger
- be able to communicate fluently in English
- hold a postgraduate degree in obstetrics and gynaecology
- be engaged in a research project in oncology
- be able to present an oral communication or poster at the XXIV FIGO World Congress of Gynecology and Obstetrics to be held 9–12 October 2023 in Paris, France
- be able to attend a residential centre of excellence in gynaecologic oncology in Paris from 2–6 October 2023

- Only proposals that are in the field of gynaecological oncology will be considered and sent to our assessors.
- Your application should include a description of how your community, district, region or country will benefit from the work proposed.
- FIGO will prioritise applicants who undertake the majority of their work in the public sector.
Application
Candidates must complete the online application form and support it with uploads of the following documents. Please note that applications must be made in English.
- Scanned copies of:
- a valid passport
- a medical degree
- a postgraduate degree
- translation into English of all degree certificates (where applicable). If you cannot send scanned copies, please contact us and we will advise further.
- A letter of recommendation from a head of department.
- A summary of a free communication to be presented at the FIGO World Congress on a subject related to gynaecologic oncology.
The deadline for submission of applications is 7 May 2023. The Selection Committee will not consider incomplete or late applications.
Reports
A report made by successful applicants will need to be submitted to FIGO by the end of December 2023. This report will be considered for publication on FIGO’s website and in its newsletter.
Selection of candidates
FIGO and the Chien-Tien Hsu Research Foundation will appoint a Selection Committee to review applications. Successful candidates will be notified by the end of May 2023. Please note that no correspondence can be entered into regarding the Selection Committee’s decision.
