Gestational Diabetes Workshops project

FIGO project with the World Diabetes Foundation

(FIGO-WDF Workshops: Links between Maternal and Child Health and Non-Communicable Diseases)

Duration: 2011-2014

Donor: the World Diabetes Foundation

Background: There is increased understanding of the negative impact that diabetes has on people’s lives, life chances and overall wellbeing. There is strong evidence to indicate that over 76 million women with diabetes or pre-diabetes (IGT) are in the reproductive age and at risk of having their pregnancy complicated by hyperglycaemia. A comprehensive resource setting out evidence-based guidance on screening, diagnosing and providing care for women with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) remains unavailable to key healthcare professionals.

Project aims:

The key aim of this collaboration is to conduct FIGO-WDF Workshops on the topic of: ‘Links between Maternal and Child Health and Non-Communicable Diseases’, with a view to building awareness among obstetricians and perinatologists through workshops, and promoting cost-effective protocols for screening and management of Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM).
