MEP condemns continued female genital mutilation

A Romanian MEP has condemned the fact female genital mutilation is still taking place in some parts of the world.

According to Norica Nicolai of Romania's National Liberal Party, it is sad this "barbaric practice" continues to occur in the 21st century, the Parliament reports.

She was speaking after a vote of the European Parliament focusing on the issue, which resulted in MEPs opting to do more to tackle female genital mutilation across the globe.

Members of the international body backed a motion arguing the practice is a form of child abuse and can cause irreversible physical and psychological damage to victims.

MEPs of all persuasions and nationalities supported the view that female genital mutilation violates a person's human rights and that it cannot be viewed as an aspect of any religious faith.

Figures from the World Health Organization indicate that an estimated 92 million girls aged ten and older have undergone the procedure.
