Unsafe abortions 'causing maternal deaths in Africa'

More than half of all maternal deaths in Africa can be attributed to unsafe abortions, it has been claimed.

Obstetrician and gynaecologist Philip Danny told an audience at the First International Congress on Women's Health and Unsafe Abortion, staged this week in Bangkok, Thailand, that restrictive legislation and a lack of access to modern family planning methods were largely to blame.

The American expert claimed that many women are treated inhumanely across the continent, often being coerced into motherhood at an early age, reports New Vision.

Mr Danny said the African people should reject political leaders who do not take steps to reduce the number of maternal deaths.

Speaking at the Bangkok event, Professor Kamheang Chaturachinda, president of the Women's Health and Reproductive Rights Foundation of Thailand, questioned why women are continuing to die through unsafe abortions despite the great advances in technology.

Earlier this month, AFP reported that the Philippines – where the use of contraception is widely objected to – had witnessed a "population explosion" in recent years.
