Zimbabweans lead the way on condom usage in Africa

Zimbabweans use more condoms than their counterparts living elsewhere in Africa, new statistics reveal.

Figures from the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and the National Spending Association show that 11 million male condoms and five million female condoms were distributed in Zimbabwe by the former last year as part of its Condomise campaign.

Meanwhile, data indicates that some $7 million was spent on condoms in the country over the past 12 months - more than anywhere else in Africa.

This suggests that awareness of the spread of HIV and other sexually-transmitted infections has improved in Zimbabwe, providing authorities with the hope that this can also be the case for the rest of the continent.

Speaking to local publication News Day, senior HIV advisor at the UNFPA Bidia Deperthes commented: "People are going to have sex, with or without a condom. We just want to help people make the right decision for safer sex."ADNFCR-2094-ID-801811901-ADNFCR
