The recent Zika virus outbreak - and its association with the birth defect known as microcephaly - highlights the need for universal access to the full spectrum of reproductive health services for all women. Recognising that contraception is essential health care, the needs of reproductive age and pregnant women go further.

The International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) supports the International Day of the Midwife 2015 (5 May 2015).
FIGO - the only global organisation representing gynecologists and obstetricians, with Member Societies in 125 countries/territories - believes that there are excellent reasons for obstetricians and gynecologists to collaborate closely with midwives to help strengthen midwifery.
17 November 2013 marks World Prematurity Day. It is a key moment to generate national level attention towards cost-effective solutions for prevention and care, and towards supporting families who have experienced a preterm birth.
Prematurity has become the leading cause of newborn deaths worldwide, resulting in more than 1 million deaths each year. Most newborn deaths among this group are caused by lack of simple, essential care such as warmth and feeding support.
FIGO supports International Day of the Midwife (5 May 2013)
International Day of the Midwife - held on 5 May each year - was originally launched by the International Confederation of Midwives (ICM) in 1992 as a campaigning day on which to raise awareness of midwifery and to highlight the importance of midwives’ work worldwide.
