Engaging adolescents and young adults about family planning and contraception – a toolkit

What we’re doing

FIGO’s Committee on Contraception and Family Planning, together with the Committee on Human Rights, Refugees and Violence Against Women and Committee on Safe Abortion, has developed a short set of priorities to improve vulnerable groups’ access to family planning and contraception information and services.

These groups include adolescents and young adults, who often have great difficulty in accessing information and services in most settings and who now number more than half of the world population.

How you can help

Share FIGO’s statement

Share FIGO’s statement with your colleagues, partners and networks to help highlight the need for open and honest conversations on safe sex, contraception and infection prevention with young people. By doing so, you can help protect the health and lives of young people by ensuring they are aware of their safe reproductive health care options.

Discussing sexual health

When young people are informed, they're better able to make the sexual and reproductive choices that are best for them.

SRHR information

A lack of information can prevent young people from seeking sexual and reproductive healthcare.

This puts lives at risk.

We're calling on healthcare providers to commit to having open conversations on sexual health, including contraception and infection prevention, to expand access to essential services and save lives.

Health care conversations

A health care conversation with a young person is incomplete if it does not mention sexual health, including safe sex, contraception and infection prevention.

Access to accurate information and affordable, safe and acceptable products enables young people to access the services they need to protect their health, lives and futures.

National UHC programmes should make contraception available to all young people who need it.
