It is with great sadness that FIGO announces the death of Dr Habib Muhammed Sadauki, the immediate past president of the Society of Gynaecology and Obstetrics of Nigeria (SOGON) and State Coordinator on FIGO’s LDI:REACH project.  

All at FIGO who worked with Dr Sadauki were touched by his kindness and dedication, and he was hugely influential in setting up the LDI:REACH project in Nigeria. We mourn his loss and send our condolences to his family and the SOGON community.  

Obituary 

Dr Habib Muhammed Sadauki, MB, B S,   F M C O G,   F W A C S,   F R C O G   (UK),   M S c   (m g t)was the 18th President of the Society of Gynaecology and Obstetrics Of Nigeria (SOGON), from November 2020 to November 2023. Prior to this he had been the first Vice President of SOGON and the Chairman of SOGON Northwest Sector. He was one of the longest serving members of the SOGON Executive Council and a model of humility, dedication and perseverance. 

Dr Habib M. Sadauki's journey in the realm of medicine was truly remarkable, commencing from his formative years at Barewa College, Zaria, and culminating in his distinguished career as a renowned Obstetrician and Gynaecologist. His alma mater, Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria, was where he refined his expertise and passion for women's health.  

In collaboration with his colleagues, Dr. Habib Sadauki co-founded the esteemed Premier Clinic in Kano a testament to his unwavering commitment to providing exceptional medical services. Not only was Dr Habib Sadauki a proficient clinician, but he also made significant contributions to healthcare and played a crucial role in shaping the medical services landscape in the region and the country ensuring that top-tier care was accessible to all. He served meritoriously as the Executive Director of Kano State Health Management Board. His legacy will endure through the multitude of lives he impacted and the indelible mark he left on the medical field. 

Dr Habib Sadauki was an amiable gentleman and made lasting friendships with many. His professional life was impressive as he served in many senior government, non-governmental positions and private medical practices. 

His leadership acumen was prominently displayed when he was elected as the National President of the Society of Gynaecology and Obstetrics of Nigeria (SOGON), a position that underscored his influence and prestige within the medical sphere. His service followed a strong tradition of transparency and accountability. 

During his three years as President, SOGON's presence was deeply rooted within the Federal Ministry of Health, particularly in the Department of Family Health, where he was involved in almost every aspect of maternal and newborn healthcare activities. His presence was felt in most MCH committees.

It was also during his tenure as President that SOGON secured the Leadership Development Initiative (LDI) project with FIGO. The goal of the project is to improve maternal and newborn health outcomes by reducing the prevalence of PPH and pre/eclampsia through advocacy and enhanced care. While working on the Leadership Development Initiative project with FIGO, SOGON established new networks with sister societies, and thanks to support from these connections, secured an election into the FIGO council at the last AGM/Scientific conference held in Paris. SOGON and its members are proud of this achievement. 

Dr Habib Sadauki was highly adored as a trainer, undergraduate and postgraduate examiner and mentor. He will be remembered for his efforts and achievements in bringing forward a formidable generation of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists and other health personnel in Nigeria. His influence extended beyond SOGON and the medical profession and he remains highly revered nationally and internationally.
