FIGO collaborates with WHO on an innovative abortion care app to empower healthcare workers

Alongside other healthcare organisations, FIGO worked with the World Health Organization (WHO) and the UN Special Programme of Research in Human Reproduction (HRP) to introduce a groundbreaking abortion care app.

This innovative digital support tool, designed to assist healthcare providers to deliver comprehensive abortion care in alignment with WHO Abortion care guidelines.  was put to the test with the support of FIGO's Advocating for Safe Abortion Project in February and March 2023. The field test engaged healthcare workers from FIGO member societies in Ethiopia, Rwanda, Kenya, Uganda, and Zambia, with the goal of gathering valuable insights to inform further improvements. The app is now available to download from the App Store and Google Play.

Empowering healthcare providers for quality care

The app empowers healthcare workers to make informed decisions by providing bespoke assessments, WHO-aligned recommendations and essential checklists. This digital tool takes the individual characteristics of patients and generates patient-specific recommendations for healthcare providers to consider as they manage abortion or post-abortion care.

"FIGO is dedicated to improving access to abortion care around the globe and we work through our member societies, OBGYNs and other healthcare providers to achieve this. This app is a convenient resource for healthcare providers to provide more comprehensive, structured and consistent care. This simple, effective tool will mean more women can make choices about their own health and their right to safe and quality abortion can be met."

- Frances Longley, Chief Executive of FIGO

Recognising the vital role of healthcare workers in providing essential abortion and post-abortion care, this app equips them with an array of resources, including WHO guidelines, publications, evidence briefs, and infographics. It underscores the commitment of FIGO and WHO to ensuring that healthcare providers have access to the latest evidence-based information and tools to deliver high-quality care.
