FIGO editorial highlights global impact of reproductive rights violations
The International Journal of Gynecology & Obstetrics (IJGO) has published the compelling new editorial ‘Beyond borders: The global impact of violating reproductive human rights’, co-authored by the FIGO Committee on Contraception and the Division of Sexual and Reproductive Health and Wellbeing.
The editorial outlines how restrictions on abortion, contraception and fertility services—along with barriers faced by marginalised groups—are undermining fundamental human rights worldwide. FIGO emphasises that SRHR are indivisible from broader human rights like equality, non-discrimination and participation.
The editorial also underscores the devastating impact of such violations, particularly on women, adolescents and vulnerable populations in crisis zones. It points to rising maternal mortality, cycles of poverty and the erosion of gender equality as key repercussions. FIGO stresses the urgency for comprehensive action, calling on healthcare providers and governments to safeguard SRHR and ensure universal access to safe, inclusive reproductive health services globally.
FIGO’s advocacy centres on promoting universal access to SRH services, enhancing protections for healthcare providers and ensuring that SRH is prioritised, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. Through education, capacity building and global partnerships, FIGO is committed to advancing reproductive justice and upholding the right to health for all.
