FIGO supports International Women's Day, 2017

International Women’s Day (IWD) - a global day celebrating the economic, political and social achievements of women past, present and future - is celebrated on 8 March each year. The International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) supports its valuable objectives.

The 2017 theme for International Women’s Day is ‘#BeBoldForChange’,   calling for change to make the world a more ‘gender inclusive’ place.

FIGO - a global organisation bringing together gynecological and obstetrical societies from 130 countries/territories - has as its vision women of the world achieving the highest possible standards of physical, mental, reproductive and sexual health and wellbeing throughout their lives.  FIGO pursues its mission in very concrete ways: through advocacy, programmatic activities, capacity strengthening of Member Societies, education and training.

FIGO is supportive of all efforts to encourage gender equality - goal five [Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls] of the new Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

IWD is the perfect opportunity for healthcare professionals to reach out to women of the world to encourage them to take measures to improve their health and wellbeing. To this end, FIGO’s Committee for Women’s Health and Human Rights has produced an information campaign for women covering major areas of women’s health which includes information on a healthy lifestyle; stopping STIs; the benefits of contraception; the importance of pre-conception counselling; fertility preservation in cancer patients; how to make pregnancies safer; implementing respectful behaviour towards women; and stopping gender-based violence. The campaign information can be found at this link: http://www.figo.org/committee-womens-health-and-human-rights-whhr

FIGO also actively collaborates with many other global, national and regional organisations to promote the wellbeing of women and to raise the standards of practice in obstetrics and gynecology - the world can only ‘#BeBoldForChange’ for gender equality through effectively managed robust partnerships.
