In recognition of World Menopause Day 2024, FIGO is spotlighting its newly formed Committee on Women at Menopausal Age, dedicated to improving the health and wellbeing of women during and beyond menopause.

This year’s theme focuses on Menopause and Menopause Hormone Therapy (MHT), also known as Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT), with an emphasis on promoting its safe, effective use.

"On World Menopause Day, let's raise awareness about the benefits of Menopause Hormone Therapy (MHT). MHT effectively relieves symptoms like hot flushes, night sweats, and vaginal dryness, while improving bone and vaginal health. Careful consideration is essential for women with moderate or high-risk factors. Individualised guidance from healthcare providers can help improve quality of life after menopause.” - Prof Suvarna Khadilkar, Chair of FIGO Committee on Women at Menopausal Age

MHT plays a key role in relieving common menopausal symptoms and supporting long-term health. The FIGO Committee on Women at Menopausal Age aims to raise awareness among healthcare providers and women about the importance of MHT while ensuring its appropriate use through personalised treatment.

While MHT is a core focus, the committee also promotes a holistic approach to menopausal care, recognising that each woman’s journey is unique. Key initiatives include:

  • Promoting healthy ageing through self-care, healthy lifestyle choices, physical activity and nutrition.
  • Exploring strategies to manage the impact of menopause on mental wellbeing and cognition.
  • Enhancing the knowledge and skills of OBGYNs to provide appropriate, high quality menopause health care.
  • Access to mobility devices that promote physical independence.
  • Mental stimulation activities to enhance cognitive health.
  • Reconstructive surgeries for conditions such as pelvic floor disorders.
  • Fostering healthy relationships to support emotional wellness.

By promoting MHT and comprehensive care, FIGO aims to enhance the health and wellbeing of menopausal women. FIGO calls on healthcare professionals and policymakers to recognise the benefits of MHT and join efforts to support women during this vital stage of life. FIGO’s commitment to menopausal health aligns with its broader mission to advance global healthcare standards and promote healthy ageing worldwide.
