NPC aims to boost reproductive education in Nigeria

Nigeria's National Population Commission (NPC) has called for more reproductive education to be provided to women.

According to Dr Festus Uzor, commissioner for Enugu State at the body, getting guidance on family planning would help females determine at what age they should become pregnant, reports Nigeria's This Day newspaper.

"These services must be accessible in the rural areas because the problems are more where people are not educated," he commented.

For instance, he warned that the maternal mortality rate is particularly high, while women in many areas are unable to access any means of contraception.

Dr Uzor said that if this issue is addressed, females would be better able to determine how many children they want to have and how much time to leave in between each pregnancy.

He added that the NPC also wants to increase public awareness on issues such as HIV/Aids in Nigeria in the near future.
