Obstetric fistula map published

A map of available women's health services for people suffering from obstetric fistula around the world has been published.

The Direct Relief International, Fistula Foundation and United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) have released the document - which is the largest and most comprehensive of its kind - to highlight the areas where it is difficult for people to access treatment.

It is estimated between 50,000 and 100,000 women suffer from the childbirth injury per year, but UNFPA coordinator of the Campaign to End Fistula Gillian Slinger noted only around 14,000 people were treated in 2010.

The problem can cause difficulties in childbirth and chronic incontinence and is highly taboo in many countries. Said Ms Slinger,

"Documenting where treatment is available is critical to providing care, raising resources and restoring the health and dignity of women and girls living with fistula."
