One doctor for refugee camp of 120,000

Caesarean sections at Za'atari camp, which is the temporary home to 120,000 Syrian refugees, are carried out by a single capable surgeon, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) has reported.

"Around a dozen" deliveries take place in the camp on a daily basis, the UNFPA said, with "one overworked Moroccan doctor" able to provide surgical intervention where a C-section is required.

Last month, the UNFPA called on the international community to "urgently increase" aid for Syrian refugees, of whom 1,500 to 3,000 more cross the border into Jordan every day.

Effectively the fifth largest settlement in the country, Za'atari camp is served by two reproductive health clinics established by the UNFPA. The organisation has also created three "safe spaces" for women and children in the camp.

"Thank God we have clean facilities and safe instruments in such a refugee camp," a mother who gave birth by Caesarean last week said.
