Written by the FIGO Committee on Health Systems Strengthening and Respectful Care, this paper highlights the significance of strengthening health systems in order to achieve universal healthcare coverage and reduce maternal and newborn mortality rates around the world.

One in two women will suffer from a pelvic floor disorder within her lifetime. How can we be silent when reported rates are as high as 50%?1 Yet, women and health care providers remain voiceless in the global arena. More troubling is that there are preventable and manageable solutions to this problem so there is no reason for women to carry this burden alone.2,3

A new supplement published in the International Journal of Gynecology (IJGO) describes the remarkable progress made in abortion access in crucial areas, such as law and policy reforms, improved access to information and supportive health systems and communities.
