Long winding road from heavy menstrual bleeding to fetal neurodevelopment: Iron Deficiency throughout the life cycle
Date: Thursday 7 November 2024, 13:00-14:30 UTC
Description:
Recent research has demonstrated an evident link between heavy menstrual bleeding and iron deficiency. Not only does heavy menstrual bleeding appear to be far more common than originally thought but it is likely that the overwhelming majority of those with heavy menstrual bleeding are affected by iron deficiency and its related impacts on cognitive and physical function. Moreover, there is an increased risk for several adverse obstetric and fetal outcomes when iron deficiency is present during pregnancy.
This webinar brings together evidence of this continuum across the life course and will highlight the:
- Physiological role of iron and impact on physical and cognitive function
- Impact of pregnancy on iron deficiency and the impact on fetal neurodevelopment
- Impact of heavy menstrual bleeding on iron deficiency and iron deficiency anemia
- Importance of correcting anemia prior to elective benign gynaecologic surgery
The webinar is led by the FIGO Committee on Menstrual Disorders & Related Health Impacts.
