Gian Carlo Di Renzo is a candidate for the position of FIGO President Elect 2023-2025.
Biography
Gian Carlo Di Renzo is currently Professor of Obstetrics, Maternal Fetal Medicine and Gynecology and Coordinator of the Reproductive and Perinatal Medicine Research Center (2002 -) at the University of Perugia, in addition to being the Director of the Permanent International and European School of Perinatal and Reproductive Medicine (PREIS) in Florence (2012 - ). He is distinguished Scholar at the PRB Unit at NIH-NICHD of Bethesda, USA ( 2022- ) . He is also full Professor at the Dept. of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Perinatology at the I.M. Sechenov First State University of Moscow since 2019 He has been former Chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Perugia (2004 - 2021).
After graduation cum laude at Medical School of the University of Padova (1975), he was a research fellow at the Universities of Verona, Messina and Modena. After training at CHUV in Lausanne (Switzerland), at UCH in London (UK), at the University of Texas in Dallas (USA), and at the Catholic University in Nijmegen (NL) (1977-1982), he became a senior researcher at the University of Perugia. From 2004 to 2022 he was Professor and Chairman of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University or Perugia., Chairman of the Midwifery School in the years 2004 to 2016, of the Ob Gyn Resident’s program (2008-2021) and of the PhD Program in Translational Medicine (2012-2022). He was general Secretary of the Italian Society of Perinatal Medicine ( 1994-2010), President of the Italian Society of Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynecology ( 2002-2004), Secretary-Treasurer ( 1996-2000) , President (2000 - 2002) Executive Director and Chairman of the Educational Committee( 2002-2008) of the European Association of Perinatal Medicine , Vice President of the World Association of Perinatal Medicine (2007-2013) . He is founding member of the World Association of Perinatal Medicine (1991), of the International Society of Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynecology (1991), and of the International Academy of Perinatal Medicine (2005). He is honorary member of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Societies of Hungary, Cuba, Argentina, Ecuador, Romania, Russia, Tartastan, Armenia, Georgia, Czech Republic, Spain, Serbia and Montenegro, Italy , of the Perinatal Societies of Europe, Uruguay, Spain, Croatia, Serbia, Romania, Greece, Russia and Italy ; of the Reproductive Medicine Society of Mexico; of the International Academy of Reproductive Medicine; of the Croatian Society of Ultrasound in Medicine, the Spanish and the Ibero American Societies of Prenatal Diagnosis and the Romanian Academy of Sciences. Since 2011 he is fellow of the Russian Academy of Sciences. He has been awarded the Gold Medal of the Bangladesh Society of Ob/Gyn (1992), the Maratea Children Prize (1994), the prize of the Corradi Foundation for “Scientific Research” (1998), the Liley Medal from the “Fetus as a Patient” International Society (2006), the Allan Chang Visiting Professorship (Hong Kong, 2007) and the Maternity Prize of the European Association of Perinatal Medicine (2008). He has been awarded six Doctor Honoris Causa in Medicine and Surgery from the Purkinje University of Prague (2002), from the University of Athens (2008), from the Iuliu Hatieganu University of Medicine and Pharmacy of Cluj-Napoca, Romania (2008) from the University of St Petersburg, Ott Institute, Russia (2013), from the Carol Davila University of Bucharest (2022) and from the Universidad de Buenos Aires, Argentina (2019). He has been appointed Honorary Professor at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Buenos Aires, Argentina (2010), the State Sechenov University of Moscow, the Siberian University of Tomsk, the Russian State Medical University (RSMU) of Moscow, Russia (2011) the University of Omsk, Russia (2013) the International University of Dubrovnik (Croatia, 2011) the University of Moldovia in Chisinau (2012) the University of Serbia in Belgrade (2011) the Kuban State University of Krasnodar, Russia (2014), the Cornell University of New York (2010- 2014), the Kansas City University Medical Centre (2011-2020), the Catholic University of Porto Alegre (Brazil, 2015), the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology, State University (2015-2020) . He was honorary consultant at the Hamad Women Hospital in Doha, Qatar, and at the Al-Adan Hospital in Kuwait City, Kuwait (2008-2012). He has been member of the Advisory Board of the Ian Donald School of Ultrasound (2008-2015).
Since 2011 is Fellow ad eundem of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (London) (FRCOG); since 2012 is Honorary Fellow of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology (FACOG) and from 2016 Hon Fellow of the Indian College of Obstetrics and Gynaecology (ICOG). From 2012 to 2018 he served as honorary Secretary General of FIGO (London). He is now director of the FIGO affiliated educational platform Global Alliance for Women’s Medicine (GLOWM 2019-) launching a new international project on Welfare of Women ( www.glowm.com ) . In 2014-2019 he was member of the Advisory and Scientific Boards of the Foundation March of Dimes (USA). Since 2017 he has been nominated as a member of the WHO “Steering Committee on Maternal and Perinatal Health”.
He is the Founder and President of the International Society on Cocoa and Chocolate in Medicine (ISCHOM, 2011-) (www.ischom.org) and Secretary of the New European Surgical Academy (NESA, 2010 - 2022 and co President since 2023 (www.nesacademy.org). In 2019 he founded with 16 colleagues the International Foundation for Maternal, Periconceptional, Perinatal and Neonatal Medicine (FIMPP) based in Amsterdam, NL , of which he is President.
He is founder and medical director (2015- ) of the 3DIFIC company devoted to 3D printing in medicine (www.edific.it) scientific director of the Onlus Foundation GEBISA (GEnitori and BAmbini SAni) located in Perugia (since 2000, www.gebisa.it ) and founder of the innovative start-up "Millegiorni" (2020, Spoleto, www.millegiorni.eu ) dedicated to the ecology of maternal and child health. He is founder and member of the Executive Board of the Consortium WIRhE ( World Initiative for Rh Eradication) (www.wirhe.com) dedicated to the eradication of fetal-neonatal Rh disease in the world and based at the Cornell University in New York.

From 1983 to 1998 he was co-director ( with E V Cosmi) of the International School of Perinatal Medicine at the Centro Ettore Majorana in Erice. From 1997 to 2006 he was co-director of the European School of Perinatal Medicine. He is co-founder and co-president (with Moshe Hod) of the Biennal International Congresses on “Diabetes & Pregnancy” (DIP, 10 editions, last ones in Barcelona 2017, Florence 2019, Thessaloniki, 2023). Scientific President of the 10th World Congress of Perinatal Medicine (Moscow, Russia, 2013). He is Founder and Director of the International Permanent School of Perinatal and Reproductive Medicine (PREIS School), endorsed by the European Society of Perinatal Medicine, WHO, Emergency and other International Societies, based at Istituto degli Innocenti in Florence (2012- ) (www.preischool.eu ). He is chair of the Organising Committee of the World Congresses of Maternal Fetal and Neonatal Medicine (1st London, 2016, 2nd London 2019, 3rd virtual 2021, Barcelona 2025).
From 1996 to 2022 he was Founder and Editor-in-chief of the “Journal of Maternal Fetal and Neonatal Medicine”, for Taylor and Francis Pbl, UK, and since 1999 he is corresponding editor of the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology. In 2018 he was invited by the Chinese Medical Association to act as honoured Editor in Chief of the Chinese journal in English language “Maternal Fetal Medicine”.
Moreover he is the founder of a new international peer reviewed online, open access, continuous flow, free to read Journal on “ Safe Motherhood and Neonatal Health” official journal of the Global Academy of Women’s Medicine ( 2023- ). He is in the Editorial board of 12 international and 4 national peer reviewed journals. Besides, he is international reviewer for more than 20 international peer reviewed Journals.
His scientific production comprises over 1500 papers of which more than 480 in referred international journals (h-index 61; i10 index 221) and more than 100 scientific books. He is author of the major Italian textbook of Obstetrics and Gynecology for Verduci Pbl., Rome, 2005 (2 vol, 2600 pages, 2nd edition 2009). He also coauthored with U. Simeoni the Atlas “The Neonate and Perinate” (Informa , Oxford, 2006) with S. Gerli the handbook on “ Obstetrics and Gynecology on the road” (Verduci, Rome, 2012, translated in Spanish and Portuguese by Elsevier Pbl), with A. Malvasi the textbook-atlas on “Cesarean Delivery” (Taylor and Francis, London, 2016, translated in Russian by V. Radzinsky, 2021), with A. Malvasi and A. Tinelli the series of textbooks on “Management and Therapy of Pregnancy Complications” (Springer Pbl, 2016-2017) the textbook on “Diabetes and Pregnancy” (with M. Hod, A. De Leiva, O. Langer for Informa, Oxford, at 4rd ed, 2023) the textbook “ Good and bad practice in labor and delivery” (with V. Berghella and A. Malvasi) for Edra Pbl, 2019, the Texbook on “Periconceptional Medicine” (Minerva, Turin, 2020, translated in portuguese by E Fonseca, 2021) and the special issues on“ Progesterone in Obstetrics and Gynaecology” and on “ Environmental challenges in human reproduction” for Best Practice and Research in Clinical Obstetrics and Gynaecology, London, Elsevier, 2020 and 2023. He has recently published two books for Springer Nature: in 2021 “Essential writing, communication and narrative skills for medical scientists (before and after the COVID era)” and in 2023 “ Prenatal diagnostic testing for genetic disorders”. He is completing within 2023 the textbook on “Obstetric and gynecological women's health: prevention and safeguard - The European textbook of Obstetrics and Gynecology”.
He has been invited as speaker to more than 1600 international and national congresses, meetings and courses in more than 120 different countries.
He writes and speaks English, Spanish and French fluently.
