FIGO has launched a new cross-committee initiative aimed at improving fibroid care worldwide. The concept was born out of the FIGO Regional Congress 2022 in Cartagena, Colombia, where leading experts identified the urgent need to enhance diagnosis and treatment for the millions of women affected by fibroids.

Fibroids can impair bladder, bowel and sexual function; cause infertility; and may lead to complications such as miscarriage, postpartum haemorrhage and severe anaemia. Globally, the majority of women worldwide develop fibroids during their reproductive phase, with African women disproportionately affected, experiencing an incidence of up to 80% and often developing larger and more numerous fibroids.

Recognising the significant knowledge and resource gaps – particularly in high-burden regions – FIGO’s Committees on Minimal Access Surgery, Menstrual Disorders, and Reproductive Medicine, Endocrinology and Infertility have joined forces to produce the first milestone in this effort — a special issue of the International Journal of Gynecology & Obstetrics (IJGO). This publication brings together senior experts and early-career scientists from the World Association of Trainees in Obstetrics & Gynecology (WATOG). The collection of papers reviews the latest scientific knowledge, shares practical treatment approaches and offers clear, actionable insights for frontline healthcare providers.

The FIGO best practice guidance for diagnosis and treatment of fibroids will serve as a go-to resource for healthcare providers worldwide, ensuring that up-to-date, evidence-based care reaches the women who need it most.
