Safe abortion

Mozambique liberalised its abortion law in 2014, granting legal abortion on request in the first 12 weeks of pregnancy, and longer term limits in cases of rape, incest and foetal anomaly.  FIGO National Member Society, The Associação Moçambicana de Obstetras e Ginecologistas (AMOG), was proud to support this change in law.

FIGO position statement on induction of foetal asystole in abortions at advanced gestations

Induction of foetal asystole refers to the medical procedure that intentionally causes the cessation of the foetal heart (cardioplegia). In the context of abortions at advanced gestations, cardioplegia is sometimes performed to ensure that the foetus is not delivered with any signs of life.1 This approach is generally taken to comply with maternal requests, religious beliefs, to avoid any potential legal and ethical implications of a live birth, and for technical reasons.

The theme for the International Safe Abortion Day is “Unite in abortion solidarity” – a clear indication for our pulling together to move further and faster. Acceleration of progress towards reduction of preventable morbidity/ mortality from unsafe abortion which still ravages many of our nations, must occur. Furthermore, we need to value investment in women’s human capital, reproductive justice, and quality of life.

Unite in abortion solidarity: a message from FIGO President
FIGO position statement on the recent prohibition of induction of fetal asystole for legal abortions in Brazil

In many countries around the world, women and girls facing the need for abortion at advanced gestational ages encounter significant barriers to accessing safe services. These women and girls are among the most vulnerable, are often subject to heightened stigma and persecution, and experience more severe complications and higher mortality rates when forced to resort to unsafe abortion practices.

This milestone is not just a reflection of our past achievements, but a beacon guiding our future endeavors. Over the decades, FIGO has united professionals, fostered groundbreaking research and influenced policies that have transformed lives across continents.

To honour this special occasion, we have curated a series of insightful interviews and stories from our community, reflecting on the challenges, triumphs and the ongoing mission of FIGO.
