Biography

Ongoing and meaningful contribution to FIGO 

Andre Lalonde has a well rounded experience with 30 years of active contribution to FIGO’s mission and achievements. Starting as the CEO of the successful 1994 FIGO World Congress, he was responsible to raise all the funds for the congress and lead the organising committee. 

Chaired the 2021 FIGO congress organizing committee, the 1st virtual congress due to COVID epidemic. 

Currently member of the Heath Systems Strengthning and Respectful care committee (HSS-RC).  

Chaired the FIGO Save Mothers and Newborn Committee (SMNH) for 6 years and served on the FIGO executive board as the Society of Obstetricians and Gynecologists of Canada (SOGC) representative. 

Served on the FIGO finance committee. 

Directed the successful FIGO Save the Mothers Program 2007-2011 in 1O countries. 

Co-authored the PPH textbook 1 and 2nd edition. 

Worked with colleagues to monitor the FIGO Logic Project. 

Developed with colleagues FIGO  1st PPH guidelines which is one of the most referenced article. 

Reviewer of the International Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology (IJOG)   Served on the development of PMNCH Organisation which worked with Sec Gen. of UN to propose international funding for MNH. 

Represented FIGO on WHO panels such as PPH, Misoprostol and others. 

Developed and managed The International Childbirth Initiative (ICI): 12 Steps to Safe and Respectful MotherBaby-Family Maternity Care, now implemented in 30 countries. 

Received the FIGO distinguished Service Award of Outstanding Service-2009 

Contribution to national society SOGC and to national level 

Building a solid financial and strategic base for the SOGC, expanding its reach and its contribution to the profession, nationally and internationally. Served as CEO of SOGC for 21 years, developed clinical committees, secured financing to purchase the Journal of Obs-Gyn of Canada. 

Responsible for the development and financing SOGC leading to a budget of 12-15 million and expanding the SOGC from 3 to 50 employees.  

Developed public education initiatives such as the Contraception Awareness Program, Menopause Awareness and Healthy Beginnings book. 

Developed and implemented several maternal and newborn care risk management programs across Canada (MORE-OB, ALARM) and deploying the ALARM International program in over twenty low resource countries as a method to address maternal mortality and morbidity, and strengthen obstetric and gynecological societies. Active in partnerships with family physicians, nurses, midwives, and other stakeholders involved in reproductive health at the national and international level. 

Received the SOGC Presidential Award on 2 occasions. 

In addition, worked with the Cree Aboriginal Nation to bring back birthing to rural remote communities of James Bay Quebec and worked intensively for the regionalisation of Obstetrical services for Montreal. 

Other international level contributions 

Founding member of Partnership for Mother Newborn Child Health (PMNCH); participated in the development of the international financial proposal  for reduction of MMMNCH and received personal recognition by the UN Sec. General Ban Ki-Moon. 

Developed partnership with ICM, IPA, IMBCI. 

Worked as volunteer at Vunapope hospital in Papua New Guinea. Developed and participated in partnership programs with Haiti, Guatemala, Uganda and in international projects in Uruguay, Burkina Faso, Niger. 

RCOG fellowship at eundem, Fellow CNGOF, ACOG distinguish service award 

Honorary member of national Obs-Gyn societies of Japan ,Chile, Haiti, Bolivia, Guatemala, Uganda in recognition of outstanding contribution to women’s right and maternal health. 

Burkina Faso Honorary member in recognition for his PPH work cervical cancer  and women’s rights. Chevalier de l’ Ordre national du governement du Burkina Faso. 

Other contributions to the profession: 

Teaching at McGill University, Dept of Obs/Gyn. Reviewer for many Journals. International lecturer on PPH, MNMM, Risk management, EOC, integrated mother newborn care, BEOC, EOC and ICI. 

Developed and secured funding of La salle General Hospital, Canada’s first birthing center of 45 single LDRP rooms.  

Appointed as Clinical Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Ottawa and McGill University, and Adjunct Professor in Health Administration at the University of Ottawa.  

Graduated BA, MD from Ottawa University, Residency at McGill University Royal Victoria Hospital, Fellow RCPSC, ACOG and ACS. Master in Science,  

Health Planning and Finance from LSHTM-LSE.
