Stephen Rulisa
Stephen Rulisa is a candidate for the position of FIGO Regional Trustee Africa - Eastern Mediterranean 2023–2025.
Biography
Professor Stephen Rulisa has 20 years of experience in Research and Academic Medicine, presently practicing Obstetrician gynecologist with PhD in public health focusing on infectious diseases and Maternal health.
He is a Clinical Researcher with several years of research and clinical Practice with experience in epidemiology, public health especially reproductive health and health systems strengthening, and to this have conducted several projects to improve maternal health both at Policy and patient care level.
Have also held leadership positions in both academic as Dean of school of Medicine and Pharmacy at University of Rwanda and as a clinician and head of department of obstetrics and gynecology covering all teaching hospitals in Rwanda based at University teaching hospital of Kigali.
Have also Founded and chaired the department of education and research at University Teaching hospital of Kigali,
Presently serving as National chair of Maternal, Perinatal & Child death Surveillance and Response (MPDSR) committee responsible for monitoring, evaluation and mitigating maternal and perinatal mortality in Rwanda, this appointment was due to his impact as a leader and clinician with expertise in program evaluations.
Have done several consultancies on program evaluations, impact assessments and lead several research projects and published several publications and conference presentations.
Currently serving as a Clinician (Chief Consultant) and Professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, University of Rwanda, with other adjunct appointments at International Universities.
Founding fellow of East Central and Southern African College of obstetricians and gynecologists (ECSACOG) and Presently Chairing the Education, Research and Scientific Committee (ESRC) for East Central & Southern African College of Obstetrician gynecologists (ECSACOG) responsible for Developing curriculum and all educational materials and implementing all educational/ training Programs in the region & ensure quality training.
Member of East African Community Health Research Commission (EAHRC) - Expert Working Group on Research and Capacity Development
Past President of Rwanda Medical Association, and past Vice President of Rwanda society of obstetrician gynecologist and Current Board member of Rwanda Medical Council and Rwanda Medical Journal among others.
Has served as external examiner for several institutions including Mbarara University of Science and technology, Uganda, Addis Ababa University (Black Lion University Hospital), Ethiopia, St Paul Hospital & Millennium Medical college, Ethiopia, Kamuzu University of health Sciences, Malawi among others.
Have made significant contributions to peer-review journals through own publications with over 100 peer reviewed publications as well as serving as an associate editor and board member for BMC Pregnancy and Childbirth, PLOS one, Current Obstetrics & Gynecology Reports, and Rwanda Medical Journal.
Championed and lead Reproductive health & Research Project that aimed at awareness of reproductive health among youth in Rwanda aiming at education in reproductive health education, family planning and research to generate evidence in reproductive health
Served on several advisory committees on maternal health, and antimalarial treatment groups and was appointed to chair Scientific committee for International Federation of Obstetrician gynecologists (FIGO).
