On International Safe Abortion Day 2024, FIGO is highlighting the enduring efforts of FIGO's Advocating for Safe Abortion (ASA) project to dismantle barriers of safe abortion care and support healthcare professionals in delivering high-quality sexual and reproductive health services.

Since 2019, the ASA project has empowered 12 national societies of obstetrics and gynaecology to champion evidence-based safe abortion advocacy as national, regional and global leaders. FIGO’s implementation model puts focus on sustainability through organisational capacity strengthening and advocacy for wide-reaching systemic changes. This means whilst the project continues to work directly with our member societies in Burkina Faso, Cameroon and Mali, all member societies in past and present project countries continue to act as leaders in safe abortion advocacy.

Even as the project concludes in many regions, these societies continue to lead the charge in advocating for safe, accessible abortion care. Here, we caught up with a few of the graduated societies to hear about their latest remarkable achievements since the official close of the ASA project in their countries.

Continuing the Legacy of ASA

FIGO’s Advocating for Safe Abortion project may have concluded in these countries , but the impact endures through the ongoing work of these societies. Their continued leadership in abortion care advocacy ensures that pregnant people have access to safe, high-quality services, regardless of the barriers that remain. On International Safe Abortion Day 2024, we commend their efforts to secure reproductive rights and save lives.
