Terrorism is an assault on humanity, but its scars cut deepest into the lives of women and children. FIGO stands as a moral, scientific and humanitarian force – calling for justice, delivering lifesaving services, protecting health personnel and advancing gender-sensitive peacebuilding. By embedding this commitment within our Strategic Plan and Scientific Committees, FIGO not only relieves suffering today but builds a foundation for resilience, dignity and justice for generations to come.
Strategic plan alignment
- Advocacy and rights: Advance women’s human rights in conflict zones, spotlighting terrorism’s disproportionate toll.
- Professional development: Support obstetricians and gynaecologists to serve effectively in humanitarian crises, with safety and dignity.
- Capacity and partnerships: Strengthen partnerships with UN agencies, humanitarian NGOs, and local actors for joint responses.
- Accountability and evidence: Lead in monitoring, research and accountability on SRHR violations during terrorism-driven crises.
Scientific divisions and committees’ contributions
- Committee on Women Facing Crises: Human Rights, Refugees and Violence Against Women: provides frontline in advocacy and survivor support. Leads on documenting violations, ensuring justice and advocating for survivor reparations.
- Division of Maternal and Newborn Health: ensures continuity of lifesaving maternal and newborn services worldwide, including in terror-affected areas.
- Committee on Ethical Aspects of Human Reproduction and Women’s Health: frames ethical guidelines for care provision in terror-affected zones, including balancing neutrality with advocacy.
- Committee on Contraception: works to safeguard access to contraception as a right, even in crisis, to protect against coerced pregnancy, unsafe abortion and exploitation.
Our scientific divisions and committees are also uniquely placed to:
- Disseminate research and generate knowledge, including evidence on gendered impacts on terrorism.
- Share latest guidance on technology and innovations in crisis response.
