The FIGO Fistula Surgery Training Initiative is a globally recognised programme delivering training and education to more than 65 trainee fistula surgeons – ‘FIGO Fellows’ – and multidisciplinary teams from some of the world’s most underserved regions.

It is estimated that only one woman in 50 has access to fistula treatment. 

Dr Andrew Browning, Fistula Surgeon and Chair of the FIGO Committee for Fistula and Genital Trauma, and also Chair of the Fistula Surgery Training Initiative Expert Advisory Group trains FIGO Fellows to provide life-transforming care to help significantly address the global treatment gap.

Now Obstetric Fistula: Where We Currently Stand, jointly written by FIGO’s Fistula Surgery Training Initiative and the International Society of Fistula Surgeons (ISOFS), draws on decades of clinical and programmatic expertise to put these milestones in context.

Back in 2007, FIGO’s academic journal led an inquiry to identify research needs and priorities for tackling prevention and treatment of this neglected public health and human rights issue.
