Division of Benign Surgery

This division encourages and promotes safe and appropriate surgery for women. It focuses on minimal access surgery, obstetric fistula and genital trauma, urogynaecology and pelvic floor disorders.

Surgery is one of the pillars of OBGYN and constitutes a fundamental tool in the maintenance and improvement of the quality of life of women. Following FIGO's 2021-2030 Strategic Plan commitments, the division works to, through surgery:

  • Improve the health and wellbeing of women and girls across their life course worldwide,
  • Enhance the status of all women, girls, and families,
  • Advance the practice of benign surgery through education, training, research, and advocacy, employing the highest ethical and professional standards.

This division champions the triple A strategy: Advocacy, Access and Awareness. We will work to ensure the safety of patients undergoing benign surgery, empower women through education and adequate information, and prioritise the training of specialists in current surgical techniques.
