One FIGO Fellow, trained to provide life-transforming care to help significantly address the global treatment gap, is Dr Fahmida Zabin, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University, and MAMMS Institute for Fistula and Women’s Health, Dhaka, Bangladesh. 

This month FIGO speaks with Dr Fahmida Zabin about her experience of being a fistula surgeon.

Women who go through the menopause early could be helped to conceive children by a pioneering stem cell treatment scientists have developed.Researchers in Cairo, Egypt, have come up with a way of restoring the ability of ovaries to produce eggs using cells developed in the lab.This could offer hope to the thousands of women who experience the menopause early.

FIGO was delighted to have worked with the Emirates Medical Association (EMA), in partnership with the African Federation of Obstetrics and Gynecology (AFOG) and the Federation of Arab Gynecology and Obstetrics Societies (FAGOS), to organise its Regional Congress of Middle East and Africa (11-13 April 2018). Much of FIGO’s work is focused on these continents and it was an excellent opportunity to showcase the projects being done by the people who live there.

The South Sudan state of Western Bahr el Ghazal has launched a campaign to tackle the problem of fistula.

Health minister Isaac Clerto wants to put an end to the condition which can occur after complications during childbirth.

Mr Clerto stated that the project will involve the creation of a new women's ward and help in better diagnosis and treatment of the condition. He also warned that underage girls are more susceptible so advised against early marriages.
